We need Different things to Survive and Thrive – a Perspective from a Succulent

There is a little succulent plant that lives on the windowsill in my office. I’ve named him Fred.

Fred is a wonderful reminder of how differently we see the world and how we need different things to survive and thrive.

Fred requires lots of sunshine and two-tablespoons of water every two weeks to thrive.

There have been times, particularly during the very hot summer that we’ve recently come through, that I have been quite concerned about Fred and I’ve had to hold myself back from giving him more water…

It comes from my need for water and my discomfort in the heat… not his…

I worried when, in the first week that he lived with me, he turned dark red and shriveled up… I thought he was getting burned… but he’s fine. Turns out this was just part of his growth cycle…

Every time I water him he grows a little. He’s healthy and so beautiful…

How I feel may not be the way you feel. What works for me does not necessarily work for you… and in the case of Fred if I were to have imposed my concerns on him I would likely have killed him…

I wonder where else I might do this in my life?

What are your thoughts?
