Identity

I watched Bohemian Rhapsody last night and have been deeply affected by it. I woke up crying today – a deep down, not-just-from-me cry.

I read through the lyrics (of Bohemian Rhapsody) again this morning and the movie has forever changed the way I will listen to that song.

I have huge appreciation for the depth, artistry and uniqueness of what Queen produced and it is a strong reminder to me to drop the formula and stay fresh…

And…

I am profoundly grateful to people like Freddy Mercury who lead the way in a very public open way, who reflect our humanity in the face of massive judgement, and for those who loved, supported and accepted him – to all of those who cut the path…

I am also grateful when I see progress in society towards more acceptance, less judgement and towards appreciation… and then the next wave comes and something new starts to present itself to be looked at and considered and the cycle starts again, another layer ready to be peeled. There are so many questions about identity at the moment – sexuality, gender, race, culture etc – firm standings of “I am different” and wanting to be recognised as such and then the counterpoint of wanting to break down stereotypes and labels…

My gratitude for the path-makers extends into my personal interactions with family, friends, colleagues and students who impact who I am becoming and the way I see the world, who walk the line and lead the way, who challenge and question and courageously step towards themselves and others… May you journey in strength as we dance through this life together…

What are your thoughts?
